I went to Vietnam for exchange during my summer break. It was truly an interesting experience that I will never forget. When I was there for the first few days, everything was so hard for me. I was not used to the cold weather, living condition was terrible, hardly anyone can understand me because they do not speak English etc. Thankfully, after the first week, I had completely adapted and was enjoying really much throughout the time in Vietnam.

The project that I was in is called “Global Passport” which was by AIESEC NEU in Hanoi, Vietnam. The main aim of this project was to improve the student’s confidence in using English. The exchange participant’s role in this project was to plan 2 activities per week and conduct those activities. Activities were created so that student had the chance to carry out those activities in English. With those activities, they had the chance to use English in their conversation and indirectly, they can improve their English speaking skills.

So every week, we planned activities and games. On the day we had our activities, we conduct those activities we had planned. While those students were carrying out their activities, we will play the role as a facilitator. Those Vietnamese students that joined the activities were university students. Vietnamese is widely spoken there. So by joining these activities, they can practise their English and speaking skills.

I learnt many things throughout this exchange. I learnt how to work with other people effectively. For example, EPs from other countries had to work together to plan the activities. This made me learn how to facilitate better after conducting several activities and at the same time, I was able to improve my English. It was a win-win situation!

Besides that, travelling alone to a foreign country makes me more independent as a person. My parents were not beside me. So I learnt to make my own decision, take care of myself etc. I am more appreciative with the things I have now and do not blame life that much after living in a country that is underdeveloped that Malaysia. Now I know that how lucky I am to have a better living condition that most of the people out there.

I will definitely encourage people to go for exchange. Challenge yourself and leave your comfort zone. You only learn when you are outside your comfort zone!
